Specialty lending and alternative data

DataX

DataX is an Equifax-owned specialty credit reporting company that provides nonprime lenders with consumer payment-history and alternative credit information separate from an Equifax nationwide report.

What the report is used for

Payday and installment lending, specialty or marketplace finance, subprime credit cards, rent-to-own financing, fraud review, prescreening, and related nonprime decisions.

If it appears on an adverse-action notice

A notice naming DataX means the lender used information from the separate DataX file. DataX did not approve or deny the application, and the information is not automatically included in an Equifax nationwide credit report.

What may be in the report.

The actual fields depend on the product ordered and whether the company has information about you.

  • Identity, address, demographic, and application information used to match a file
  • Specialty-loan or credit-card tradelines, payment history, balances, dates, and account status
  • DataX inquiries, risk or fraud indicators, and other alternative data included in the product ordered
Official consumer routes

Request, freeze, or dispute the right file.

Use these direct paths instead of a paid credit-repair service or a phone number from an unsolicited message. A freeze at one company does not automatically freeze another report.

Request your report

DataX provides a free annual report and a free report after qualifying adverse action; its consumer site supplies the current mail request form.

Freeze information

DataX offers free placement, lifting, and removal of a freeze on the DataX report only. Its freeze mailing address differs from its report and dispute address.

Dispute an error

DataX directs consumers to submit its signed investigation form by mail and says accurate negative information is not removed merely because it is unfavorable.

Official dispute path

First three steps.

Do not dispute accurate information just because it led to an unfavorable decision.

  1. 01 Request the DataX report named in the notice rather than substituting an Equifax nationwide report.
  2. 02 Compare each lender or account, balance, status, payment event, date, inquiry, and identity detail with your records.
  3. 03 Send a specific dispute to DataX and the lender or other company that supplied the inaccurate information.
Have the denial notice?

Separate the reporting-company disclosure from the decision-maker’s action.

The company that supplied a report usually did not make the final decision. Use the notice decoder to choose the credit, banking, housing, employment, insurance, or utility context, then identify the report and next record to compare.
